Journalism coursework

As a Journalism and Mass Communications Major at the University of Iowa, I am constantly growing in many different areas all while maintaining a great GPA. I have taken introductory and foundational classes throughout this major to teach me the core topics of all forms of journalism. I also use my Event Management Certificate and Sports and Recreation Management Minor to deepen certain areas of journalism and place an emphasis on the areas I wish to have a career in. Throughout my classes, I have used Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Bridge, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe PremierePro and Audacity to produce journalistic work in different lights. I work well with others, lead those around me, am organized, and am dedicated in all aspects of school.

REPORTING AND WRITING

JMC:2010

I developed foundational skills in journalistic reporting and writing, learning to communicate with clarity, accuracy, and conciseness. Through in-class exercises and out-of-class assignments covering campus and city events, I gained hands-on experience conducting interviews, researching stories, and producing enterprise reporting. This course strengthened my ability to gather reliable information, craft compelling narratives, and think critically.

Multimedia Storytelling

This course specializes in photo, audio and video production. I learned how to plan for these stories, use the designated equipment, edit on multiple platforms, and produce a well thought out story.

VISUAL COMMUNICATION & DESIGN

JMC:2030

I developed foundational skills in visual communication design, learning to create clear, engaging, and purposeful visual messages. Through lectures and hands-on projects, I gained experience with key design principles such as typography, color theory, composition, and visual perception, while also building technical skills using graphic design software. This course strengthened my ability to design effective layouts, communicate ideas visually, and consider ethical and inclusive practices in my work. Overall, it prepared me to be a more thoughtful and skilled visual communicator for advanced coursework in journalism and mass communication.
